July 27, 2026 Dear Michigan Tax Tribunal: For many years, my annual property tax obligation was approximately $200 while the property qualified for the NEZ benefit. Upon expiration of the NEZ, my annual tax liability increased dramatically to approximately $4,000. While I understand that the expiration of the exemption would result in an increase, I am concerned about the magnitude of the increase and would like to determine whether the current assessment and resulting tax bill are accurate and whether there are grounds for an appeal. In February, I timely submitted an appeal to the appropriate local authority, along with supporting documentation challenging the assessment. Unfortunately, I did not receive a response before the March Board of Review appeal deadline. As a result, I was unable to pursue any additional administrative remedies within the prescribed timeframe. Because I made a good-faith effort to challenge the assessment and was unable to obtain a timely response, I am seeking guidance regarding any remedies that may still be available. For your review, I have attached a current market analysis for the property, which I believe supports a lower assessed value than the one assigned by the City Assessor.
