Re: Request for Relief Regarding 2025 Property Taxes

Property Address: 13655 Lakeshore Dr.

Parcel Number: 70-07-04-300-032

Tribunal Docket Number: 26-002610

Dear Members of the Michigan Tax Tribunal:

I respectfully submit this letter to provide additional explanation regarding my failure to

provide the disability documentation associated with my request for relief from my 2025

property taxes.

For the tax years 2022, 2023, and 2024, I received relief from my property tax obligation

based upon my circumstances and submitted the required documentation to my township.

Throughout those years, I made a good-faith effort to comply with the township's

requirements and provide the documentation requested of me.

When I personally appeared at the township office to submit my tax exemption paperwork

for the 2024 tax year, I had a conversation with the township clerk concerning the

continuing requirement to provide documentation of my disability. During that

conversation, I understood the assessor to tell me that I would no longer be required to

provide the disability documentation "the following year."

I would also like to clarify why the township does not have written documentation of this

particular conversation or of my understanding of the instructions provided to me. My

communications with the township concerning these exemption matters were conducted

entirely through in-person visits and telephone calls to the township office rather than

through email or other written correspondence. I personally delivered my paperwork and

discussed the requirements with township personnel during those visits. Consequently, I

do not have an email, letter, or other written record memorializing the conversation in

which I understood that the disability documentation would no longer be required "the

Page 2

following year." The absence of such documentation is therefore a consequence of the fact

that these interactions occurred in person and should not be understood to mean that the

conversation did not occur. I spoke to township Assessor Ben Albin (616-604-6306) on

October 1st, 2026, and he confirmed that there is no record of correspondence present.

Based upon my understanding of that statement, I believed that beginning with the 2025

tax year, the township would no longer require me to submit a new disability letter each

year. I therefore did not intentionally neglect or refuse to provide the required

documentation for 2025. Rather, my failure to provide it resulted from my sincere

misunderstanding of when the change in the documentation requirement would take

effect.

I have since learned that my understanding was incorrect. I now understand that 2026,

rather than 2025, is the year beginning with which the township will no longer require me to

provide disability documentation annually. Had I understood at the time that another

disability letter was required for the 2025 tax year, I would have provided the

documentation just as I had done in the preceding years.

I respectfully ask the Tribunal to consider that this was a procedural misunderstanding

rather than a change in my underlying circumstances or an intentional failure to comply

with the township's requirements. My history demonstrates that I previously followed the

required process and received property tax relief for the 2022, 2023, and 2024 tax years

without issue. I had every intention of continuing to comply with the requirements

applicable to me.

The difficulty arose solely from my interpretation of the township assessor's statement that

I would no longer need to provide the documentation "the following year." At the time, I

reasonably understood that statement to refer to the next tax year, 2025. I now recognize

that the intended meaning was that the permanent change would become effective

beginning in 2026.

Accordingly, I respectfully request that the Michigan Tax Tribunal consider the

circumstances surrounding this misunderstanding and grant appropriate relief with respect

to my 2025 property taxes, allowing them to be forgiven, waived, or otherwise treated in the

same manner as my property taxes for the 2022 through 2024 tax years, to the extent

permitted by law.

I am prepared to provide any disability documentation, prior exemption records, or other

supporting information that the Tribunal may require in order to verify my eligibility and the

history described above.

I sincerely regret the misunderstanding and respectfully ask that I not lose the tax relief for

which I otherwise qualified solely because I misunderstood the year in which the annual

documentation requirement would cease. I appreciate the Tribunal's consideration of the

circumstances, my previous compliance, and my good-faith effort to follow the

instructions provided to me by the township.

Thank you for your time, attention, and consideration of this request.

Respectfully submitted,
